If you are looking to get promoted in your current workplace, you need to be ready when the opportunity arises and determine what you need to do to achieve success.
The first thing you must do is secure the position that you already have. You need to be efficient and even excel at the job you currently hold. You need to go above and beyond the duties set for you. Place yourself in a position that makes you an essential employee—one that the company cannot seem to do without. If you are perceived by everyone to be an essential employee then the people doing the hiring will take note of your talents and be more apt to consider you when an advanced position presents itself. Look to Your Skill SetYou also need to look at the skills you may need to get promoted. While doing your current job, ask if you can job-shadow the person in the position you are hoping to achieve. This will give you an idea of what duties you may need to perform in that job. You may be able to practice doing those skills while in your own position, or you may find that you need to upgrade your skills to that level. At any rate, when applying for that promotion, you need to be ready to include that skill-set on your resume. Take Extra CoursesIf you are looking for company promotion, it is always a good idea to take extra courses or attend seminars that you can add to your resume. You can take courses to upgrade your skills, time management courses, or even human resources related courses. Not only will taking extra courses elevate your skill level, but it will also show the people doing the hiring that you are serious about your advancement. Interview Trainers and Personal Image ConsultantsAnother way to prepare yourself for job advancement is to consult with interview trainers or personal image consultants. Interview trainers can help you gain the skills and abilities you may need to perform well during the interview process. Personal image consultants can help you present yourself well with respect to how you should look—what you should or shouldn’t wear, what colors make the best impression, etc. Both will give you the tools you need to stand out from the rest of the crowd who may be applying for the same position. Learning from Your MistakesIt is wise to keep track of all the jobs you apply for. Keep a record of the questions asked (so that you will be ready for that same question the next time), what may have went wrong during the interview (so that you do not repeat the same mistakes), or even what skills you should improve upon. Follow up with the interviewers to find out why they did not choose you—and learn from your mistakes. Keep TryingYou may not get every job you apply for when trying to advance in your company, but it is critical that you keep trying. The hiring agents in your company will be impressed by your determination and drive. They will probably take this into account during your next interview—especially if you have improved on any mistakes you may have made during the first interview process. Although it may take extra effort on your part, it is possible to put yourself in a position for promotion within your company. Sometimes it is just a matter of being in the right place at the right time, but more often it is how well you are prepared to take advantage of any opportunity that arises.
